Good Day of Dry Fly Fishing…..

Wed…..Sept. 28, 2011……What a gorgeous day, could not have been more perfect. Sunny, light wind, and we started off nymphing. Guided Sonny Lackey and Bob Manning, and we caught a good mix of browns and rainbows to 16". We started to get some rising fish so we rigged up with dries and never went back. Had a pretty good sulphur hatch and we ended up with about a 40-50 fish outing….it was awesome. Ended with some midging and caught about 6 or 8 more at the end to finish the day. It was a great day…..have a great evening. We are headed home…

Chilly, Rainy, and Cloudy Day…

Fri…..Sept. 23, 2011…….A chilly, rainy start to the day its gray and cloudy here seems like a perfect day for some blue winged olives. We are in Jefferson on the banks of the South Fork and its been raining most of the night. The water is up and stained and likely to get more that way. Guiding Dick Simpson of Burlington and Buzz Garrett of Greenville, SC.

We are headed over Mt Rogers and to the South Holston. Looking forward to a good day, hope we get some good hatches and rising fish.

Stay tuned, more to come….

Challenging Day …..

Thurs…..Sept.22, 2011…..Had a more challenging day today, much more than past weeks. Guided Larry Tomar, a good fisherman, and we opted for a later start and then we just fished late. It was tough, few risers to start….we hit a couple of spots and had a few fish rise to the fly. We then started to see some blue winged olives, followed by some sulphurs. Larry put about 20 fish in the net, plus we broke off a few and had a few come unbuttoned while playing them. A mix of browns and rainbows, Larry’s total was impressive given no heavy hatch and the sporadic rising we witnessed. We had pretty significant cloud cover which kept the hatch light….and by 600pm it was a done deal. We hit one last spot and called it a day, but ended with hooking up on a nice brown.

The fish were tough today, very selective, very fussy about the drift and fly pattern. We did best with a CDC dun pattern size 22 in bwo color scheme. Looking forward to another day of dry fly fishing tomorrow, will be guiding Dick Simpson and Buzz Garrett, Burlington, NC. Should be great fun…

Have a great evening , more to come tomorrow…

A Start to Another Great Week….

Mon….Sept . 19,2011…..What a gorgeous morning as the sun is rising over SW Virginia and the Holston River Valley. Feels great out too, as that Fall nip is still in the air. This morning’s picture was sent to me by one of my favorite customers and friends Mac Cheek. Mac took this photo yesterday of his friend Joe Knisely while they were fishing. A nice brown indeed, and I will be looking forward to guiding Mac and Joe today and we will hopefully get into a couple of hatches and also some more excellent dry fly fishing.

Have a great one and stay tuned for more……
