Rain Is Over, Many Waters Blown Out…

Thursday….Apr. 28, 2011…….We have some decent weather coming but for many places the water is going to be high and muddy and some places will recover slowly due to the amount of rain we have already had. Cancelled the next two days fishing to give things time to settle down. Hopefully will be back in the saddle on.Monday as we have a Trout in The Classroom release date planned as students will be releasing trout they have raised from fry. Will then help the kids with the NC Wildlife stocking of the East Fork. News 14 is coming to do a short piece on the day’s activities.

Have a great evening…

Another Muddy Mess and Busted Trip……

Thurs….Apr. 28, 2011……Saw this coming yesterday, had to cancel our Fly fishing 101 class due to severe weather…..and a tornado or funnel cloud was seen about a quarter mile from our place. We had quite a storm. Met Terrence Jones this morning for our guided trip today, and was a short trip up.and back. We went to 4 or 5 places each was a high muddy mess, even some places that normally recover pretty well. Some early morning thunderstorms passed through dumping heavy rain and bringing hail and strong winds. A real mess but considering what it could have been we are fortunate to have been spared the weather that hit Alabama.

It will take a day or two for things to clear up and maybe three for some areas. It would be sooner had the ground not already been saturated.

Will post another report later today with an update on conditions. Enjoy your Thursday.

Warm Today and Some Severe Weather at Our Backdoor….

Wed…..Apr.27,2011…..What a nice morning to be outside, it was cool and cloudy with a nice breeze…..great fishing weather. Dr. Pat Burney and I had a decent day yesterday….challenging but much fun and we netted some nice fish.

Did some casting lessons with Pam Burris and Jack Harrington. Pam is headed out to fish the Bighorn in Montana…..got me to dreaming about some of our past trips there. If I concentrate I can see the heads and snouts of big rising bows and browns………better stop before I get too worked up.

A weather change is coming and are you tired of rain and flooding yet? Get ready as more is on the way. Strong storms ahead of a cold front are coming and we could be in for another round of flooding.

I fully expect to lose several days fishing to this one too but we will see ……maybe things will clear up in time for next weeks fishing.

Have our last Fly Fishing 101 session this evening…..hope the storms don’t put a damper on that.

Have a great evening..!

Challenging Day, Tough Conditions…:

Tues…..Apr. 26,2011…..Guided Pat Burney today, we decided on a later start this morning and it was a tough start …..windy, humid, heavy rain then back n forth between cloudy and sunny. We ended with about a dozen fish and worked hard for all of them. Nothing was consistent, only got one fish on the surface. Water temp is 56.5F and bugs are hatching just that water level is finally down enough to see a lot of fish rising. Did the best on subsurface midge patterns. Anything dark seemed to do the trick if it was at least a size 20….probably due to the large numbers of midges /midge larvae the fish eat where we were fishing.

Have a couple of Fly fishing and casting lessons tomorrow…Pam Burris and Jack Harrington….. and a fly fishing class tomorrow evening. Looks to be a busy day….hope the rain doesn’t get us. Have a great evening…..

Warm Morning, Sunny Day Ahead….

Mon…..Apr. 25, 2011…….A warm morning, left this morning in shorts, crocs, and t-shirt and it still really warm. Feels a little muggy just like summertime. A nice day lies ahead, in the 80s…..guiding Ho Young Lee and his two young boys. Last year we had a good trip, and everyone caught a good number lot fish each. It will be a blast as these guys can fish. More to come from the river. Hope your Easter was fantastic…..have a great Monday…

What a Wet and Soggy Day…….

Fri….Apr. 22,2011….Had a pretty rainy day today, the way the day began I just knew we were in for some muddy conditions but surprisingly even though it was raining on us pretty hard the water rose but was never muddy.  Guided Paul King and his brother in law who was here from Michigan and even though the fishing was tough we put about 20-25 fish in the net.  With conditions the way they were we were either Nymphing with bead heads, a bunny/jiggy streamers with black being the best color.  We lost 2 gigantic fish, one rainbow, one brown.  Had a trip with Scott Morgan for Saturday but rescheduled to May in hopes of finding better water conditions.  Have a great evening and a Happy  Easter…

Late Night at the Vise……

Thursday….Apr. 21, 2011….Been watching the weather radar with great interest after a whole week of blown out trips and hoping tomorrow isn’t a blow out too.  Knowing that tomorrow’s trip with Paul King of Pinehurst, NC will likely be nymphing and streamer fishing I was up late cranking out a pile of trout chocolates.  Tied a batch of nuclear eggs, pink weenies, golden nuggets, mini Buggers, and some small dark bead head flashback droppers in expectation of fishing some cloudy water. Well, better put the last whip finish on this fly and grab some shut eye.  Have a great evening and we’ll have more reports tomorrow from the river.

Improving Conditions……More Weather on the Way

Wed….Apr. 20, 2011…..Beginning to sound like a broken record but conditions have indeed improved but we do have another weather event on the horizon, a frontal system moving our way today that will arrive sometime this afternoon /early evening and potentially bringing with it another round of severe weather.  While Eastern NC got some terrible tornadoes the mountains got torrential rains and flooding.  Things have settled down in terms of high water but the ground is still saturated and any more significant rains will likely make for more flooding.  I just received reports from the Linville/upper Wilson area and the water is in good shape, high but clear and fishing is ok.  The roads that were washed out have been repaired and are passable per one of my fishing cronies who just returned from the gorge area.  Of course, Wilson clears out quickly after spates/flooding and is a mostly sandy bottom drainage so it will clean up faster than others.  Most other local places are again fishable but high, very much nymphing and streamer conditions.  The TVA and VA tailwaters have continued to release water with the TVA backing off a bit, but still releasing during the prime daytime hours…for example today they are releasing on the South Holston from 8am to 9pm.  It will be interesting to see where they go from here.  Sulphurs should be forthcoming…..and I for one can’t wait.  You can only fish staring at a bobber for so long…lol

Have posted some new stuff on the website, including several items on the Used Equipment page.   Also, be sure to check out our new Smartphone App as well.  It is a growing project and information is continually being added to it.  Info on Fishing Reports, Social Media (our Facebook, Twitter Pages, and YouTube Channel), Flies of the month, License by Phone, Fly Fishing Knots, Entomology, and more….all in your pocket.

Have a great day today and will have another detailed report later today on water conditions…..
