A Bird Worth Watching……

Mon….June 28, 2010…..It was the famous Yogi Berra with one of his ‘Yogisms’ who once said “……You can observe a lot just by watchin…’   How true.  Seems funny, but how many things around and in a river have a lot to do with what is going on with the fishing and we just don’t take time to be observant?  Or maybe we are observant, but we don’t put 2 and 2 together …….  Such is the case with this particular bird.  The bird is called an Eastern Phoebe….also known as a fly catcher.  They are the birds you see on the water, usually rivers with insect hatches, and these birds are often busy whirling about snatching insects out of the air.   In fact, during many Hendrickson and Sulphur emergences over the years I have witnessed these birds swoop in front of me and pick a fly out of midair right as it successfully hatched and then became airborne.  Though that is one example, I have seen countless times when they provided clues that a hatch was going on or the air high above the river at the tree top level – – – where we can’t see – – that spinners were dancing overhead preparing for their last hurrah mating flight to the river.  These birds are often found around bridges.  Two such places with a lot of these birds are the Clinch, Watauga and South Holston Rivers in East Tennessee .  Look under the bridge railings and you’ll see nests built on the bridge in the protected areas away from water and wind.  There are hundreds of these nests on the South Holston Bridges.  Here are a few facts about Phoebes:

Sayornis phoebe
“Eastern Phoebe” fly catcher  (Photo below)

Identification Tips:

* Length: 5.75 inches
* Dark head
* Pale throat and underparts-whitish in Spring, yellowish in Fall
* Grayish-olive upperparts
* Frequently wags tail
* Juvenile has buffy wing bars
* Often builds nest under bridges or around buildings near water

I have countless times used the presence and activity levels of these birds as a general indicator of the possibility of find some active insects and there fore some actively feeding fish.  And they are right on most of the time.  Notice it next time you find yourself on one of our local waters.  Because like Yogi says ‘ You can observe a lot just by watchin ..’

Will be on the water tomorrow guiding Ron Zambor, we are headed to VA and might fish a variety of places.  Forecast is for t-storms and a cool down, that will be great.  Then I will be on the water with John and Cristy Hardy on Wednesday, and Lynn Roloff on Thursday, and Brad Ball on Friday.  Should be a great week, will have plenty of reports for you and hopefully some good info.

Have a Blessed Week… This guy is saying , “….I hate these bees, give me some more Holston sulphurs…….!”

Another Great Week…

Sat…June 26,2010……I continue to be amazed at the great opportunities that are present even with this blistering hot weather, had a phenomenal day this week in NC, TN, and VA, there are some great opportunities some as close as an hour from our area. A cool down is coming next week in the way of a cold front that will bring some more rain and more seasonable temps in the 80s. Will be a great week on the water and have some open days coming…….Lets Go Fishing

Summer Is Here….

Sat …June 26,2010…..Its been an incredible year for the dry fly, and its not over either. The ‘bugs of summer’ are here, like e.dorotheas (small sulphurs), Beetles, ants, inchworms, midges, small caddis, small Blue winged olives, and craneflies. The last one , craneflies, I got a fresh reminder not only are they a most common summer insect. I was on the Smith on Friday and we had eight fish rise, all took the fly, all took a cranefly. The same is the case on the TN tailwaters, craneflies are an important insect…..especially on the South Holston. They are size 18 and trout scarf the down faster than Jeff does a Webb Store double cheeseburger on a toasted bun……..Have a Great Weekend

A Decent Morning on the Smith….

Fri…June 25,2010….Early morning and start did a half day lesson/Trip with Dr. Mike Mango and his son Ike, what a nice morning, cool 63F and heavy river fog. We did ok, caught some rainbows and browns and have a new killer Smith River dry fly the fish are loving. We didnt see a tremendous amount of rising fish, but there were a ton of craneflies on the water and several fish willingly ate my new pattern for imitating them.. Its hot, but what a relief to stand in a river that is 54F…..enjoy your weekend, have more trips and reports coming next week.

What A Day……..

Tues…June 22, 2010……Ended our day on a positive note………with three absolutely huge rainbows, one over 10lbs and one nice smallmouth to boot. Guided Dan Camia and Larry Tomar today and we didnt get quantity but quality was definitely on our side. We caught 7 rainbows from 22" -30", one a fish over 10lbs, plus 6 nice smallmouth and a half dozen redeyes too. It was quite warm, sunny, and we made a full day of it. Some new flies are working well. 2 of the 3 largest fish hit a new Y2K pattern, the other a new hybrid san juan worm pattern. Will be on the South Holston tomorrow chasing the sulphur hatch and trying out some new flies as well. Guiding Mike Workman, Mike is a good angler so it should be a good day. Good evening to you..
