Sulphurs…..Sulphurs……Sulphurs……!

Thurs…Apr 29,2010……Had a good half day trip with Lavon Williams of Greensboro, NC yesterday, it was cool, 30sF to start but warmed to the low 60’sF by afternoon, and the bugs were pouring off.  Yesterdays rain bumped up the flow a little on a number of waters and I suspect that is why, coupled with the windy conditions, why we didn’t see more rising fish.  But the bugs were everywhere.  I took a water temp at 11am and it was about 53-54F and I thought….sulphurs….Guess what, about a half hour after that they came, and there were lots of them.  Size 18 dorotheas pouring off, the fish were eating well under the surface but very few rises.  That’s not uncommon even when there’s a hatch.  The bugs hatch, sit on the surface, get blown everywhere….you guessed it, the fish decide its not worth the chase.  But underneath a different story……..a feeding party is taking place.  We had a great half day/on the water lesson, I taught Lavon the basics of nymphing all water types and she took to it very well.  I guess we put probably 20 fish in the net including two large fish, one rainbow that was a citation fish, and she caught probably 3 singles that I pointed to and that she had to make a cast to, get a good drift, see the take, set the hook, etc…..she was 3 for 3.  I will take batting 1000 anyday.   My gut feeling is the next few warm days with light wind will yield some great dry fly opportunities and also that the sulphurs might finally be in full swing….soon.  CDC sulphurs, CDC sulphur emergers, pheasant tails, half backs, split cases, AP black nymphs….sizes 14-18 I’d be packing the box with them…..I am!

Gorgeous Day….

Wed Apr 28,2010……Nice weather day today, had an early morning tying up a few flies for my half day trip today with Lavon Williams. Report to follow later…have a good one

What a Phenomenal Day

Fri Apr 23,2010…What a great day today in Russell County, VA with Jim Fealy and Brian Donley, caught 40 or so from 15-24″, and probably 10-12 of them 20 inches or larger. Brian Donley landed the beast of the year so far, a rainbow that was 29″-30″ long and well over 10lbs. We finished the day with a Hendrickson hatch and a few sulphurs and caught some 20inchers rising and on dry flies. What a day. Headed over to NC side for a Guided trip with Charlie Peters from Raleigh and his 3 sons. Could be a moist day, we’ll see.. Have a great weekend

Great Day, Cool and Cloudy

Wed Apr 21, 2010…842pm….had a great day on the water with Len Worsham, we put about 30 in the net including a mix of nice brookies, rainbows, and a nice smallmouth, many of them on some new patterns–one a new fly called a Wee Worm. Water temp 57F, tons of bugs coming off, the sulphurs have begun. If the conditions remain stable we should see some great sulphur action in the coming weeks. Headed out with Ron Zambor of Winston-Salem tomorrow, have a great evening

Great Morning, Cool Temps, Lt Rain, Tons of Bugs Hatching….

Wed Apr 21, 2010…..Out with Len Worsham of Greensboro, NC, what a nice day it is, fishing is pretty good, not on fire but catching fish here and there. Still mostly on nymphs, the water is up slightly from the rains but all in all it is in great shape. Water temps are in lo to mid 50s which is ideal. Have seen some March Brown Spinners, Litte Yellow Stones (Sallies), a few Hendricksons, a few Gray/Black Caddis, and a few BWOs /Blue Quills. Have caught a mix of bows and brookies, all of them at least 13" and Lens best is 15". More Later…..
